I am at my 3rd year of my asparagus bed (2 rows 2 foot apart with plants 18 inches apart). I had a lot of small skinny plants and I found a site that said to add more soil so I hilled the aspargus rows. They were originally planted 8-10 inches deep (Indiana)...per directions at garden center. I have 24 plants and barely got enough spears for 2 skimpy servings...is this normal, is the hilling corect? My directions said to only harvest for 4 weeks the 3rd year so my plants are starting to fern out. Should I dig them up this fall and start over, knock down the hills, or increase the soil in-between the hills?

Will I have to wait one year for asparagus spears to get long enough to cut? also it it the same for rubarb? If you have time you might like to see how the bees work in your garden. Join us at yardbuilder101's@wordpress.com .
