Question Help with identification of plants

    Hi!

I have a few plants that were already in my yard when I bought the house (central North Carolina) and need help identifying. I know they flower, but I didn't get to see the flowers as it was late in the season when I moved in. Any assistance is greatly appreciated. The taller one with hydrangea leaves has a woody stalks but new growth doesn't grow from it and I know it's not a hydrangea. The smaller plant with the droopy leaves gets little red or yellow hanging flowers (It had a few left last year). 0515161142b_resized.jpg0515161142a_resized.jpg0515161142_resized.jpg0515161141a_resized.jpg0515161141_resized.jpg

One is, I believe, a hardy hibiscus. The one with woody stems but with the stalks not coming from them. It dies back to the ground each year and those wood leftovers can be removed. It is also a late starter, but they're really pretty. Dinner plate sized blooms in august.
