I would like to grow shallots from seed and then use some of the product for my own sets in subsequent years. Does anyone have experience with this? I have had fairly good luck with growing my own garlic and onion plant sets and am wondering if there are any significant differences.
  • What is the best way to store the "sets" until planting?
  • Spring or fall planting? I grow fall planted garlic in raised beds in our zone 4b garden- don't know if I can chance it with shallots.
  • Any favorite varieties? We prefer as close to the traditional French as our climate will allow and a good storing variety.

Any advice from experienced shallot gardeners would be welcomed.
