Discount Shrubs

I purchased 2 shrubs for my sister at one of the local garden centers, which were heavily discounted (end of the season). Unfortunately, she was not able to get them in the ground for about 3 weeks. I watered as best I could, but the shrubs look pretty dead.

One of the shrubs was a pink flowering almond shrub, it looked the best out of the 2. The leaves were starting to yellow and some had fallen off. The second shrub was a Potentilla, it looked like it was dead, with only a few bits of green.

Did we lose our money or is there anyway to salvage them? We live in Zone 5
