I do not have infinite garden space. I am to the point where I need to get rid of something for every new plant I buy.

How can you compost a perfectly healthy plant just because it blooms for a short period of time? Transplant it to another part of the garden and add another mum beside the current one.

A lot of mums are hardy only to Zone 5. Gardeners in colder climates find asters a lot more reliable. Also, asters vary from year to year as to length of bloom. Not only the temperature but the moisture level of the soil affect the length of bloom. And also there are a lot of different kinds of asters, and bloom time varies among species.
